Clarifiers are settling tanks built with mechanical means for continuous removal of solids being deposited by sedimentation. A clarifier is generally used to remove solid particles or suspended solids from liquid for clarification and/or thickening.

A clarifier is commonly used in the pre-treatment stage after coagulation and flocculation reagents have been added to the water for removal of the resulting flocs.

In sewage treatment, sedimentation tanks (known as secondary clarifiers) are used to remove flocs of biological growth created in the secondary treatment stage.
